Advania claims it will build sovereign AI clouds

Goldman Sachs-backed firm bets on local data

Nordic IT services outfit Advania, which is part of Goldman Sachs Alternatives’ portfolio, has decided to splash out on building multi-tenant sovereign AI clouds in every one of its seven markets.

The cunning plan, approved by the company’s board, builds on what it calls “proven setups” in Sweden and Iceland and is meant to drag the rest of its operations up to the same level. The big idea is to let private and public sector clients process sensitive data within national borders, ticking all the regulatory boxes while supposedly turning that data into something more lucrative.

While everyone else rushes to glue off-the-shelf AI widgets onto spreadsheets and chat apps, Advania is trying to sound like the adult in the room, says it is offering “a complete and accessible AI portfolio.” The company insists that customers can safely use their data to generate real-world business improvements instead of churning out more digital fluff.

Advania says its teams have plenty of AI experience, having delivered projects for banks, manufacturers, retailers, telecoms, and government departments. By rolling out a sovereign AI cloud in each market, it reckons customers can squeeze real value from AI without their data taking an unauthorised holiday abroad where it can be legally snuffled up by spooks.

Advania chief executive Hege Støre said: ““This is a key strategic step for Advania. We are setting a new standard for sovereign AI in Europe, ensuring that organisations adopt AI on their own terms, with their data secured at home. The demand is here now, and organisations need sovereign and scalable solutions today to gain the cost efficiencies and growth opportunities that turn AI into a true competitive advantage.”

Advania board member and Goldman Sachs Alternatives global co-head of private equity Michael Bruun added: “The decision to expand sovereign AI cloud capabilities across all markets underscores Advania’s differentiated ability to help European organisations realise the full value of AI. With the combination of local presence, proven infrastructure and advisory expertise, Advania is uniquely positioned to help organisations realise the benefits of AI in a secure and cost efficient way. We are proud to support Advania on this journey.”

To pull it off, Advania will rely on its recent purchase of Gompute, a high-performance computing and AI infrastructure outfit that already runs sovereign AI clouds in Sweden and Iceland. Those two will apparently serve as launch pads for the rest of the expansion. The company picked up The AI Framework, a consultancy that specialises in AI strategy and delivery, giving Advania something to talk about at both the hardware and boardroom levels.

The firm claims that this combined setup will let it flog “sovereign AI services at scale” across Europe, giving nervous organisations the illusion of control and security as they scramble to join the AI gold rush.
