The third founder of Apple has no regrets
You could buy a
lot for $800 in those days
The third founder of Apple says that he had no regrets about flogging his share in the outfit for $800.
Ronald Wayne worked alongside Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, Wayne was given a 10 percent share in Apple but quickly sold it for just $800 in 1976. If he had kept them they would be worth about £13.6 billion. Talking to the News of the World Wayne tells the tabloid newspaper he has no regrets over the decision.
"If I had stayed I would be incredibly wealthy but I would have wound up the richest man in the cemetery - dying of a heart attack. In actual fact Jobs had borrowed $15,000 to buy the materials to make computers. He said he was in debt for $1,500 and I had no idea where I would get that money. I had enough stress in my life and I couldn't take any more. I was looking for a quiet life," he said.
Wayne, 75, now lives on a small state pension, in a modest home in the retiree town of Pahrump, Nevada. He said he had no idea Apple would become such a big company. But there was no point thinking “what if”. He has his health, family and integrity “and that is the best fortune you could ask for."
