AMD tipped to bump Radeon RX 9070 GRE up to 16GB

Chipmaker wants fatter memory bus

The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn that AMD is planning to beef up its Radeon RX 9070 GRE with more memory after punters grumbled about the 12GB launch earlier this year.

The RX 9070 GRE first showed up in April as a sort of three-quarters RX 9070 XT, carrying 48 compute units and a 192-bit memory bus. Not exactly terrible, but hardly something to set Nvidia’s accountants sweating.

According to Chinese channel source Bobantang, AMD is preparing an upgraded 16GB version to match market demand. Word is the refreshed model could drop between September and October, giving GPU obsessives a new excuse to throw cash around before Christmas.

If the whispers pan out, the 16GB model will still use a 48CU core but shift to a 256-bit memory interface, which would put it much closer to a full-fat RX 9070 XT. Whether that’s enough to claw sales away from Nvidia's overpriced offerings is another matter.
