Globalfoundries claims it will develop both 22nm and 20nm
processes and that it will continue to offer half-node processes in the
future. TSMC has recently announced that it will skip the 22nm process
and focus on 20nm instead and both TSMC and Globalfoundries will skip
the 32nm bulk process.
Globalfoundries Director of Corporate Communications Jon Carvill claims
that the outfit will invest in both 20nm and 22nm nodes, as some
high-volume market segments such as the microprocessor business require
full node transitions. Carvill noted that both Intel and AMD will
continue to develop full node and half node technology.
“It
is too early to tell on the exact performance/power efficiency benefits
transition from 28nm to 22nm/20nm node will yield. As the geometries
get smaller so will the levels of the shrinks,” said Carvill.
