Everyone has broadband these days
Facebook has shut down its Lite site which was aimed at
users who had dial up or poor internet connections.
The lite version only ran for seven months and Facebook
has posted a note on its own fan page saying it had "learned a lot from
the test of a slimmed-down site". The problem was that the site was not being used, mostly
because too much much Facebook was cut out from it. Especially the bits that
the social notworking site made case from.
"I think a lot of the Facebook experience was left
out of Lite, especially the monetisable parts," said Ray Valdes of Gartner
Research. The Lite site ended up being was similar to Twitter
because it offered a smaller number of features than the fully-fledged site.
In fact all Facebook Lite users could do was let users
write on their wall, post photos and videos, view events and browse
other people's
profiles. There were no games which Facebook users play or other
applications. Facebook Lite appeared to be popular among those who
wanted to check their messages while at work. This mostly because it
was rarely
blocked by network admins who didn't know it existed.
